FAYETTEVILLE — Arkansas point guard Courtney Fortson expressed regret Thursday for the message he posted on Twitter while three of his teammates were being investigated for an alleged rape last month.

Fortson spoke about the incident for the first time since his post, which read, “Im gettin it at workouts like a dude who doesnt understand the word no from a drunk girl lol,” appeared on Sept. 7. It caught the eye of Arkansas athletic department officials, who disciplined Fortson under its new social networking guidelines.

Fortson’s exact punishment has not been announced, but the sophomore could miss as many as three games.

“I was surprised about the tweet,” Fortson said when asked about the reaction it received. “I regret the tweet. But you live and you learn and you move on to better things. So I have put that behind me.”

Charges were not filed against the three players involved in the incident, which occurred at a fraternity house party on Aug. 27. But athletic director Jeff Long said Fortson’s punishment did set a precedent.

The sophomore was the first Arkansas athlete punished under the athletic department’s social networking guidelines, which were established this fall.

Fortson said he will “revise things a little more” before posting on Twitter. Arkansas coach John Pelphrey hopes Fortson’s mistake served as a wake-up call for all.

“I think all those guys need to be mindful, whether it’s Facebook, e-mail, Twitter, texting, there’s a standard there, too,” Pelphrey said. “It’s not just you it could affect. There’s a lot of people out there that may hold you accountable for your words.”
